I watched La La Land recently and it got me thinking about the magical realism aspect of the musical genre. Essentially, the scenes where the viewer is expected to take what they are seeing as symbolic rather than literal and which are usually differentiated from the rest of the narrative by the use of song.

La La Land presents itself as a bold atavism, both paying tribute to, and reviving, the glittery, glamoury musicals of the 1940s.
